A-Z HEALTH
Allergies
An allergy is a resistant response to a substance called an allergen. At the point when a child with hypersensitivities comes into contact with an allergen, the body produces a chemical response to tackle the foreign particles. These chemicals cause side effects, for example, a runny nose, wheezing, pain, and breathlessness. Side effects can be mild or more severe depending on the type of opposing reaction by the body
Anemia
It is a condition in where there is reduced number of red blood cells in the body which leads to insufficient delivery of oxygen to the cells and to the baby. It occurs commonly in pregnancy because the body is producing more blood cells for the baby and it leads to deficiency of iron and vitamins in the body which causes Anemia. It’s normal to have mild Anemia, but a severe Anemia can occur due to low iron or vitamin content in the body and should be treated immediately to prevent further complications.
Main types of Anemia during pregnancy include iron-deficiency anaemia, Folate-deficiency anaemia, and Vitamin B12 deficiency. Iron-deficiency anemia is the most common in pregnancy and it is occurs when body does not have enough iron to produce haemoglobin-protein in blood cells which carries oxygen to lungs and other parts of the body. Folate-deficiency anemia occurs when body is unable to produce new cells due to unavailability of folate. Folate is a natural vitamin found in green food like vegetables. During pregnancy, woman needs extra folate so the body make enough red blood cells to transport oxygen throughout, and it is necessary since its deficiency can directly contribute to birth defects such as neural tube abnormalities, and low birth weight. Vitamin-b12 deficiency occurs in women who don’t eat meat, poultry, dairy products, and eggs which may contribute to birth defects, such as neural tube abnormalities, and could lead to preterm labour. Vitamin-B12 is necessary for producing healthy blood cells.
Haemoglobin Test and Haematocrit Tests are used to check if a pregnant woman is anemic are not, and then doctor accordingly prescribes iron and folic acid supplements. Patients experience fatigue, dizziness, shortness of breath, pale skin, irregular heartbeat, and cold hands and feet. It can be treated by taking iron and vitamin rich foods which include red meat, leafy green vegetables, eggs, nuts and seeds.
Anemia in Newborn
Anemia is the condition which presents with a lower Red Blood Cell (RBC) count in the body. It may be due to inability of the body to make sufficient RBCs or due to excessive breakdown of RBCs. Excessive breakdown results in Jaundice (yellowish discolouration of skin and eyes. In most cases, symptoms are not visible. When visible, these include lethargy and sluggishness.
Anaphylaxis
Pregnancy can be daunting for many women. We have all heard how painful the delivery can be or just the thought of the possibility of a caesarian section can cause goose bumps. The anesthetist is involved in relieving pain associated with normal labour and also to make caesarian section possible (if required).
Anesthetists do so much more than just making you sleep so another doctor can operate on you. Pain relief (Analgesia) is one of the main divisions of anesthesia. They make sure delivery is a pleasant experience for you by giving you various options to make child birth painless. Epidural anesthesia is one of the most reliable and effective analgesia given in labour. For C-section, spinal anesthesia or epidural anesthesia is used, which means the woman is awake and can experience a PAIN-FREE delivery. However, occasionally general anesthesia is required where the prior methods are contraindicated. So an anesthetist evaluates and provides you with various options for making delivery wether normal vaginal or a C-section pain free. They are also responsible for maintaining all the vitals (temperature, blood pressure, heart rate) during the C-section.
Apnoea of Prematurity
In some preterm babies, respiratory system in the brain isn’t fully mature. This results in breathing pauses for more than 20 seconds. The infant is deprived of proper oxygen supply which leads bluish discolouration of skin. Overtime as the infant grows; respiratory system matures leading to decreased apnoea. It can be treated by gentle prodding of the infant or artificial respiration for extreme cases.
Appendicitis
Appendix is a small folding found in the right lower corner of the digestive system, when it gets inflamed, it leads to a condition known as appendicitis. A ruptured appendix is hardly present or occurs in infants, yet it is possible. A ruptured appendix can be hard for a parent to diagnose. At initially, it might appear a great deal like stomach influenza. Side effects include stomach pain and irritability. Baby usually moves its body towards the correct side, and it can be taken as a diagnostic sign
Ascariasis
Ascariasis is an intestinal disease brought on by a parasitic roundworm. Children are more susceptible than grown-ups to have gastrointestinal trouble with an ascariasis contamination. In light of the fact that their lesser developed digestive tract and less developed immune system are at more serious hazard for intestinal blockage. Worms in stool, coughing, fever and loss of appetite are common effects faced by children. The more prominent the quantity of worms included, the more extreme the side effects are probably going to be. Most cases occur in territories with poor sanitation or swarmed living conditions.
Asthma
Asthma is a condition in which the airways to the lungs end up blocked or inflamed, prompting serious difficulties in breathing. The condition occurs due to immune response to certain kinds of foreign particles such as smoke, pollens and pollutants. It usually occurs in 30% of children before the age of 3 when they are encountered with cold or upper respiratory tract infections. Wheezing, continuous and last cough and shortage of breath is accompanied.
